If you think you need a big backyard to grow fresh vegetables, think again! Even a patio, balcony, or small raised bed can provide plenty of homegrown goodness. Here are five easy vegetables to grow in small spaces.
1. Lettuce
Lettuce grows quickly and doesn’t need much depth, making it perfect for pots or window boxes. Harvest the outer leaves as you need them, and the plant will keep producing.
2. Radishes
Radishes mature in as little as 3–4 weeks, which makes them a quick win for small gardens. They can grow in shallow soil and don’t take up much space.
3. Green Beans
Pole bean varieties of green beans climb vertically, so they’re ideal for growing on a trellis or fence. You’ll get lots of beans in a small footprint, and they keep producing all summer long.
4. Cherry Tomatoes
Tomatoes are a favorite for small gardens. Choose a compact or patio variety of cherry tomatoes, and you’ll enjoy sweet, bite-sized snacks all season.
5. Herbs (Basil, Mint, or Parsley)
Herbs thrive in containers, take little space, and add fresh flavor to your meals. Plant a mix, and you’ll always have something to snip for cooking.
Tip: Use vertical growing techniques like trellises, hanging baskets, or vertical gardening planters to maximize your small space. My favorite vertical gardening system is Greenstalk. You can use my code LFF10 for an extra $10 off.
