“I never put my hands in dirt!” I grew up far from the country-not just in proximity, but also in mindset and knowledge. I never dreamed of having a garden nor did I ever imagine I would love gardening. When we moved to the country in 2019, having a garden seemed to be the right thing to do so I did. I had my husband and son build me 4 raised beds in April 2020 and that is where I started.
I had absolutely no idea what I was doing and was confused as to how a seed I would put in the ground would actually grow food. I didn't even know you could buy plant starts. I was clueless in every sense of the word.
But, I planted my first set of seeds. I will never forget the day-it was April 28, 2020. I knelt down by those raised beds and prayed to God to bless my efforts. God answered my prayers. As I watched my first seeds become food, I had this indescribable feeling of awe and before I knew it, I had fallen in love with gardening.
I was familiar with gardening and had watched my parents grow a garden several times as I was growing up. I even had my own garden when I was younger and grew peanuts!
When my wife told me she was going to garden, I said ok and did not think much about it. But, when she started to actually love gardening, I was surprised. She did not strike me as the gardening type. Our whole marriage, she had been a career woman climbing the corporate ladder. But, I saw something in her change when we moved to the country.
I could not believe my wife was gladly working in the hot sun gardening and fending off bugs and bees and not being bothered. It has been an absolute joy seeing her get joy out of gardening. My job now is to make sure I take care of all the heavy lifting for her and work alongside her to get the job done.
Marcus and Barbara are true partners on the farm and work it daily to keep it going. And no, this is not their full-time job. Marcus is in full-time ministry and Barbara runs her own HR consulting agency full-time.
